Are you prepared for an EMP attack? Nationwide chaos just one missile away

To be quite honest, every single American should be taking the threat of an EMP attack just as seriously as they take North Korea’s testing of intercontinental ballistic missiles or the Islamic State’s commitment to killing innocent Americans. Indeed, if a foreign nation or a rogue domestic terrorist were to launch an electromagnetic pulse attack against the United States, all electronic devices would be fried instantaneously. It would be like traveling through a time machine and ending up in the 1800s, forcing millions of people – most of whom can’t even go five minutes without looking down at their phones – into a primal survival situation. That’s why it is absolutely crucial that we not only take the threat of an EMP attack seriously, but that we also prepare for life off the grid. If we are not prepared, the consequences could be devastating.

Jeff Sanders of PJ Media recently published an article discussing the eight most important things you can do to prepare for an EMP attack. Among other things, Sanders stresses the importance of having a positive, determined attitude, as well as the necessity of having a bug out shelter in case the outside world becomes too dangerous.

“You should be prepared to ‘shelter in place’ when/if it happens, or to ‘bug out,’” Sanders explained. “If my family is at home, we will stay at home. If they are nearby shopping, they will have to hoof it home… Our home will be our base of operations…. Wherever you are, shelter is priority number one.”

Of course, if a safe, stable shelter is priority number one, then it only makes sense that water and food are priorities two and three, respectively. Sanders points out that human beings cannot go longer than three days without water, and in a situation where you are constantly moving and working just to survive, it is advised that each person drinks one gallon of water per day. It is a good idea to purchase water purification tablets, which you can get for less than $80 and are capable of instantly purifying 200 gallons of water. In order to easily collect large amounts of water, preppers should purchase rain barrels, or possibly even create a well on their property.

As far as food is concerned, stocking the shelves before an EMP strike is key. However, when that food eventually runs out, you have to know how to live off the grid and get food in ways other than simply taking a trip to Walmart. Sanders recommends “homesteading,” which is essentially trying to produce the most amount of foodstuffs you need to live without using electricity. Things like harvesting honey from bees, growing your own fruits and vegetables via a garden, and learning how to cook over an open fire are all concepts that the prepper should be familiar with.

Aside from a shelter, food and water, Sanders recommends in his article that preppers stockpile firearms and ammunition so that they can properly defend themselves, their loved ones and their property. “You must protect yourself and your family,” he writes. “I strongly urge you to get whatever firearm you think you can handle, learn the rules for gun safety, and buy plenty of ammunition.” Sanders goes on to say that, “Bows and arrows, tomahawks, spears, and swords are very good backups” if firearms are for some reason not an option.

Experts like Dr. Peter Vincent Pry, the executive director of the Task Force on National and Homeland Security and chief of staff of the Congressional EMP Commission, argue that an EMP attack is a very real threat that Americans should not take lightly. In the past, Dr. Pry has pointed to two North Korean satellites that are orbiting the United States and are capable of launching a surprise EMP attack. (Related: Experts warn that an EMP attack on the U.S. power grid could kill 90% of Americans.)

If that alone isn’t enough to convince you to start prepping now, then what is?
